Late Spring Lawn Care Tips

Reseeding:
If you need to reseed those bare spots, you need to hurry.  The new grass will do best when allowed to become established before the heat and drought of summer set in.  Do not apply any type of weed control product to newly seeded lawns, unless the product specifically states it is ok to do so.

Mowing:
Mow your grass to maintain it at a height of 3 inches or taller.  Never remove more than one third of the blade at a time.  So, when your grass hits about 4 inches tall, plan on mowing soon.  Maintaining a 3" height allows better root development to survive summer stress and it also crowds out the weeds.

Fertilizing and Weed Control:
After Memorial Day, you can apply a complete fertilizer to your lawn.  A product such as Scotts Step 2 or Turfbuilder Plus 2 can fertilize and help control broadleaf weeds such as dandelions at the same time.  You need to follow the labeled directions.  Just remember to apply this type of product to damp grass so it sticks to the leaves of those pesky weeds.

The best way to control weeds all season long is to provide the proper care for your grass.  A healthy lawn will crowd out broadleaf weeds like dandelions, reducing the need for herbicide applications.
